Men Who Were “Gosline Zouaves”

95pvi-01

An unidentified member of the 95th Pennsylvania Infantry wearing the first issue uniform with what appear to be canvas leggings. This photo was possibly taken in Alexandria or Washington in early spring 1862 before the regiment moved to the Peninsula. The soldier appears to be wearing a Federal issue shirt, but it is unclear what his undergarment actually is. All enlisted men of the 95th were issued trimmed shirts or vests. As was the custom, officers had a choice in what they chose to wear to distinguish their command.

An unidentified member of the 95th Pennsylvania Infantry wearing the first issue uniform with the brightly trimmed shirt that was issued to most companies of the regiment along with the uniform. The dark blue flannel shirt had red trim on the placket with silver buttons down the front. This soldier also wears a charm or identification tag on the front of his shirt, possibly a gift from a loved one at home. This photo was possibly taken in Alexandria or Washington in early spring 1862 before the regiment moved to the Peninsula. As seen in several photos of individuals, at least two companies of the 95th may have been provided elaborately trimmed vests.

David N. Bean     Private David N. Bean, Co. B, 95th Pennsylvania Infantry wearing the zouave issue jacket over a tailor-made dark vest, and wearing standard issue foot trousers and bootees. Bean was a recruit who enlisted on January 21, 1864 and his appearance when this image was taken, possibly in the late fall of that same year, is probably typical of most soldiers in the 95th PVI at this stage of the war. Bean survived the campaigns of 1864-65 and was mustered out of service with the regiment on July 17, 1865.

Robinson-McAfee Col.     Private H.R. Robinson, Co. A, 95th Pennsylvania Infantry wearing the original complete zouave uniform provided by Schuylkill Arsenal issued to the first organized company in the regiment. Evidently a number of soldiers in this company received ornately trimmed waistcoats to go along with the very fanciful jacket, or they may have been a private purchase item.

John B. Cook     Sergeant John B. Cook, Co. D, 95th Pennsylvania Infantry wearing the complete zouave uniform originally issued to the 95th Pennsylvania at Camp Gibson in 1861. Sgt. Cook enlisted in 1861 and served with the 95th PA until 1865 when he was wounded for the fourth time at the battle of Sailor’s Creek, Virginia, on April 6, 1865. Sgt. Cook was also cited for his courage at the Siege of Petersburg on April 2, 1865, when the siege lines were broken. Accompanied by Color Sergeant Albert Bannon of Company C, Cooke captured a Confederate cannon from its crew. He was mustered out of service with the regiment on July 17, 1865.

Michael Lawn-McAfee Col.     Sgt. Michael Lawn, Co. K, 95th Pennsylvania Infantry poses for this photo portrait in January 1864. The corps badge on Sgt. Lawn’s cap is labeled with a brass “95” surrounded by “PVV”, for “Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers”, with each letter in one section of the cross. Lawn was a veteran of the regiment having been mustered into service in 1861 and reenlisted in 1864. Sgt. Lawn served with the 95th until mustered out as a second lieutenant in 1865.

95th PVI soldier, 1864-65     An unidentified young private of Company A, 95th Pennsylvania Infantry poses for a formal gallery photograph, ca. 1864-65. The corps badge on the private’s cap is bordered in gold gilt and he has the brass “95” pinned just below the badge. He wears the 95th jacket over a private purchase military vest and standard issue Union trousers. The backmark of this cdv image was marked to a Philadelphia photographer so it was most likely taken during the winter of 1864-65 when many of the men were on veteran furloughs after reenlisting in the late fall.

A group of veterans of the 95th Pennsylvania Infantry. The men wear regular Federal-issue trousers and forage caps with a mixture of private purchase clothing and hats.
